Where Is My Sewer Cleanout?

The short answer

Your sewer cleanout is a capped pipe — usually 3-4 inches across, white PVC, black ABS, or brass/iron on older homes — sticking a few inches out of the ground within a few feet of your foundation, roughly in line with where the main drain leaves the house (often near a bathroom wall or the water meter side). Second most common spot: at the property line near the curb or sidewalk. Inside, check the basement floor or the base of the main stack for a capped wye fitting.

Why it matters before you ever need it

The cleanout is the front door to your lateral. Where to hunt, in order

Walk the foundation on the street side and the bathroom side, parting mulch and groundcover — caps get buried by a decade of landscaping. Check the curb strip and property corners. Inside, scan the basement or crawlspace where the main drain exits, and the base of the stack. Split-levels and slab homes sometimes hide the cleanout in a garage or utility closet. Still nothing? What if my house doesn't have one?

Plenty of older New Jersey housing — prewar two-families, rowhouses, early colonials — was plumbed before exterior cleanouts were standard. Service is still absolutely possible through a pulled trap or roof vent; it just takes longer every single time. If your line is being serviced anyway (say, during a repair), having a proper two-way cleanout installed is one of the cheapest upgrades in plumbing — it pays itself back on the first emergency.
